Pointing the way
Article Abstract:
Around 75% of the $2 billion US sign-making industry is comprised of illuminated signs and architectural advertising. The Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD) in the US is a 700-strong association which concerns itself with issues such as signage and its impact on the environment, the practice of route finding and the establishment of national signage standards. A group comprising SEGD, a team of designers, and the National Parks Service has developed a standard set of recreational symbols which will be used throughout the US in recreational sites.

The appeal to `professionalism' as a disciplinary mechanism
Article Abstract:
Non-professional labor is increasingly characterizing itself as professional, acting as a disciplinary device by creating what are regarded as "appropriate" conduct and work identities. Professionalism is not always socially inscribed in identical ways, nor does it invariably produce behavior that can be evaluated within the context of competency. This contestable nature makes the logic of professionalism an imperfect form of control.
